Vikings - Warriors from the sea - temporary exhibition
Museu da Marinha - Belém, Lisboa
VIKINGS | Warriors from the sea
Over a thousand years ago, people from the North landed unexpectedly on shores that were not prepared for them. Their ability to sail in fast and versatile ships and the unmatched violence of their attacks were the main features of these “warriors from the sea”.
In the territories that would later become Portugal, the presence of these Norsemen was ceaseless for more than 300 years, between the 9th and 11th centuries. Whether in the Christian Portucalense County, to the north, or in the southerly Islamic territories of the Al-Andalus, such as Lisbon and Alcácer do Sal, the Viking raids left an indelible mark on those societies, still present at the very beginning of the Portuguese nationality.
Comprised by more than 600 original objects from the National Museum of Denmark, this exhibition presents all the different aspects related to the history and culture of this fascinating people, one of the most feared of all times.
EXHIBITION HOURS: Monday to Sunday 10h00 | 18h00, every day except May 1st.
